Ugly Shoe Supremacy All Summer 2022
This summer, if your shoe game isn’t just slightly questionable, you’re doing something wrong. Thanks to social media platforms like TikTok and Pinterest, microtrends are being cycled through faster than ever. From Crocs to Birkenstocks, some of the most embarrassing fashion moments from our childhoods are gaining momentum this summer 2022. But every fashion junkie knows that true style comes from finding the perfect equilibrium between what is perceived as hot and what is perceived as not. That being said, unless your fit is already valid, don’t even bother splurging on these kicks.
Yeezy Foam Runner in Ochre
Yeezy Foam Runner
The Yeezy Foam Runner debuted on June 26th, 2020 by way of an unannounced
drop on Yeezy Supply. With some comparing them to Crocs, these shoes are a far cry from your old primary school sandals. Designed by Kanye West himself, “the Yeezy Foam Runner is without any laces or moving parts, and sports an alien-esque/porous construction,” reported Sneaker News. The shoes are made of not only EVA foam, but algae- a choice made by West to incorporate sustainable practices in his designs. While these otherworldly kicks retail for $75, they have taken the resale market by storm, sometimes going for triple or even four times this price. If you love clean-cut neutrals, these are the shoes for you.
New Balance Tokyo Design Studio Niobium Concept 2 in Chocolate Brown
New Balance x Tokyo Design C2
Jokingly referred to as the “Camp Counselor 4s,” the strappy sandal-like
appearance of the New Balance Tokyo Design Studio Niobium Concept 2 was “inspired by dirt trails and bodies of water you might discover while hiking,” reported Hypebeast. The sandal/mule hybrid comes in two colorways, one inspired by water and the other inspired by dirt. Released last July, the design of these shoes were influenced not only by the Earth, but also how humans interact with it. Whether you’re walking the trails of Yosemite or the streets of New York, these shoes are uniquely fashionable anywhere.
Birkenstock Boston Soft Footbed Suede Leather Taupe
Love them or hate them, Birkenstock Bostons are here to stay this summer. But
just like me, the internet is equally split on whether to love or hate these modern clogs. “The perfect slide-on option,” Birkenstock Bostons are where comfort meets chic, reported The Zoe Report. Synonymous with what TikTok likes to call the “coastal grandmother aesthetic,” these minimal shoes are the perfect option for the laid back fashionista. Though they come in an array of colors, many consumers have taken a particular liking to the lighter shades, such as “Nude” and “Clay,” so much so that it’s difficult to get your hands on them. Pair the clogs with any earth-toned ensemble and you’re sure to catch the eye of your local minimalist.
Salomon XT-6 Safari/Vintage Khaki/Castor Gray
Launched in 2013, the Salomon XT-6 was originally produced to aid athletes in
long-distance races through its cushiony yet firm foot-hugging technology. But its sporty disposition is not only perfect for the race track, but the runway. While these kicks are indeed functional, what makes them truly fashionable are their aesthetic colorways, reported Highsnobiety. With new colors rolled out this past Spring, streetwear lovers everywhere can’t get enough of models like “Apricot Buff/Frost Gray/Velvet Morning,” a sherbert orange shoe with crisp white lines and a gray/ blue outline, and “Safari/Vintage Khaki/Castor Gray,” a shoes that’s nude base makes it appear more retro than the others. Whichever color you decide to go with, you’re sure to get some love for your new digs.
Crocs Classic Clog Taffy Pink
Crocs Classic Clog
I bet you never would have guessed that in 2022 you would be dusting off your
old crocs- but here we are. During the pandemic, the foam clogs saw a 60 percent increase in sales, reported The Washington Post, with at-home residents seeking both functionality and fashionability. The publication goes on to credit Crocs’ brilliant marketing strategies for their sudden rise in popularity, including influencer marketing, collaborations with top designers, and even celebrity endorsements. While crocs have become increasingly more festive since their resurgence, what continues to remain buzz-worthy is their classic hole-punched foam silhouette. Today, many fashion gurus opt for colors such as beige or black, careful not to draw too much attention to them. Others aim to make a spectacle out of these resurfaced gems with models such as the Crocs x Sza collab, designed to look like wood clogs with the addition of funky charms. Whichever route you go, just be sure to stand behind your fashion decision.
In Summer 2022, fashion lovers are pushing the ugly shoe agenda. Whether you accept or reject the fad, be prepared to see them everywhere.
